Our Mission

To enhance the quality of life in Polk County by providing roadway improvements in safe, timely and economical ways through careful management of the Community Investment Program to serve citizens in the best manner we can.

The Transportation Engineering Division is responsible for managing all transportation aspects of the Polk County Public Works Department's "Community Investment Program" (CIP). 

The CIP includes Road Resurfacing, Stabilization of Unpaved Roads, Bridge Rehabilitation, Guardrail Program,  Sidewalk Improvements, Intersection Improvements, Roadway Drainage Improvements, Substandard Roads (improving roads to County standards), and Capacity Improvements (adding lanes). 

Our division also processes right-of-way acquisition and closures, performs surveys, processes Street Lighting Assessment Applications, and manages the Paving Assessment Program.


Goals for FY 07/08

  • Manage the Public Works Department's Transportation CIP and provide updated status reports on each project.
  • Administer the Asset Management Program (AMP).

 
Objectives for FY 07/08

  • Provide accurate and timely monthly status reports for all projects and semi-annually for the Office of Management and Budget's CIP Report.
  • Manage the design, right-of-way acquisition, and construction of all funded Transportation projects in the Public Works Department's CIP, including projects in the following categories: Roadway Resurfacing, Culvert Failure Contingency, Railroad Grade Crossings, Maintenance of Mitigation Areas, Stabilization of Unpaved Roads, Sidewalk Construction Program, Bridge Replacement Program, Roadway Drainage Projects Program, Intersection Projects, Substandard Road Projects, and Capacity Road Projects.
  • Manage the special assessment program for stabilization of both public and private unpaved local roads.
  • Evaluate and prioritize candidate transportation projects for inclusion in the CIP.
  • Process the Street Lighting Assessment applications.
  • Process utility right-of-way use permits to protect the County roadway infrastructure.
