Household Chemicals and Electronic Waste Collection Facility

Household chemical and electronic waste from Polk County residents is accepted free of charge at the North Central Landfill. Businesses, commercial enterprises, non-profit groups or anyone other than residential households are not eligible for this service. Storage and Packing Guidelines

Items should be stored in their original container with content clearly labeled. Do not mix chemicals. Do not put hazardous materials in garbage cans or storm drains. Individual containers in poor condition should be placed in a plastic bucket or bag. All items should be packed in a plastic container or sturdy box.

Acceptable Hazardous Waste Items

Products that have words such as danger, warning, caution, poisonous, or flammable on the labels should be brought to the Hazardous Waste Collection Facility.

Unacceptable Hazardous Waste Items

• Ammunition
• Asbestos (see landfill)
• Fireworks / Explosives
• Radioactive Materials
• Biomedical/Infectious Wastes

Acceptable Electronic Waste Items from Households

(Only five items per household) 

• Computer Components (no more than two complete units)
• Monitor
• CPU
• Printer and Mouse
• Televisions
• Copiers
• Fax Machines
• Cell Phones & Rechargable Batteries

Paint Giveaway Program

A portion of paints collected by the Household Hazardous Waste Facility is in good, usable condition. This paint is free to County residents and is available on a "first come, first served" basis. To take advantage of this program visit the Household Hazardous Waste Facility during operating hours.

Used Sharps Collection Program

This program collects used needles and syringes. Please follow the recommended guidelines for disposing of used sharps.

1. At the participating site, get your first sharps container or exchange your filled sharps container with a new one.
2. Place syringes in the container immediately after use. Never snap-off the needle or recap it.
3. Keep containers out of the reach of children.
4. When making an exchange, always give the sharps container to authorized personnel. Never leave a sharps container unattended.
5. Always make sure your sharps container is sealed properly. For safety reasons the exchanges sites have the right to refuse any improperly packaged boxes.
