Reserves

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid Florida driver's license
  • Successfully pass the department background check
  • Must obtain and maintain FBI Criminal Justice Information Services Security Awareness Certification
  • Successfully pass the department physical and applicable written and practical testing to the position sought
  • Possess State of Florida recognized certification appropriate to the position being sought (see below)
  • Possess a valid high school diploma or GED equivalent

Applicants who have successfully completed the application process will attend either the Reserve Firefighter Academy (RFA) or a Reserve Responder Program (RRP) orientation as appropriate for the position sought. Upon completion of the RFA or RRP orientation, the reserve responder will be added to reserve active list (Ride List) applicable to their position. They will be issued skills package, then given their initial assignment by the reserve coordinator.

Reserve Positions

  • Reserve EMT/Paramedic (firefighting certification not required) - more info

    Certified and trained equivalent to full-time counterparts. Works as an EMT or paramedic on an ambulance or fire apparatus as extra personnel in support of career personnel. May work as part of a team assigned to an ambulance, fire apparatus, or other specialized vehicle at events such as races, parades, festivals, and other "special details". Receives and participates in ongoing training, drills and other educational events to maintain certifications and operational readiness.

    • Must live within 10 miles of a county fire or ambulance station
    • May be assigned a pager. May respond to page out calls when available
    • Must have and maintain Florida EMT or Paramedic certification
    • Must complete a minimum ride/standby times
    • Must complete department required assignments
    • Must pass initial and annual physical

  • Reserve Firefighter 2- more info

    Certified and trained equivalent to full-time counterparts. Works as a firefighter on a fire apparatus as extra personnel in support of career personnel. Assignment may be to specific apparatus or station based on operational needs. May work as part of a team assigned to an ambulance, fire apparatus, or other specialized vehicle at events such as races, parades, festivals, and other "special details". Receives and participates in ongoing training, drills and other educational events to maintain certifications and operational readiness.

    • Will be assigned to ride at stations and augment / support career personnel
    • May perform all functions of a firefighter
    • Must have Florida Firefighter 2 certificate (Minimum Fire Standards)
    • Must have and maintain Emergency Medical Responder (EMR, aka: First Responder) or Florida EMT or Paramedic certification
    • Must complete a minimum ride/standby times
    • Must complete department required assignments
    • Must pass initial and annual physical

    Certified and trained equivalent to full-time counterparts or to former volunteer firefighter level and may operate in an Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) atmosphere. Works as a firefighter on a fire apparatus as extra personnel in support of career personnel. Assignment may be to specific apparatus or station based on operational needs or may respond to a larger area such as a battalion. May be assigned a pager and respond to dispatches when available. May work as part of a team assigned to an ambulance, fire apparatus, or other specialized vehicle at events such as races, parades, festivals, and other "special details". Receives and participates in ongoing training, drills and other educational events to maintain certifications and operational readiness.

    • Must have Florida Firefighter 1 or Firefighter 2 certificate (Minimum Fire Standards)
