Major Road Repairs Closing West Lake Eloise Drive for Four Weeks
Published on Apr 8, 2020
Bartow, Fla. (April 8, 2020) — On Monday morning, Polk County will close a 500 foot long section of West Lake Eloise Drive south of Avenue Z SE in Winter Haven for four weeks to correct longstanding settlement and roadway flooding issues. The road segment, north of the Lulu-Eloise Canal Bridge, has slowly settled over the years from decaying muck in the subgrade beneath the pavement. The underlying unsuitable material will be removed and replaced with an engineered fill designed to reduce future settlement. A raised pavement section will be built atop the new fill to lessen future flooding.
Traffic will be detoured to bypass the confined work zone for crew safety and to speed construction. Southbound through traffic will be unable to turn from Avenue Z SE onto West Lake Eloise Drive. Northbound traffic will be diverted at Shell Road about a half-mile south of the Lulu-Eloise Canal Bridge. Access to local residences will be maintained. Motorists can expect travel delays and commuters should add extra time to trips through the area, particularly during peak morning and evening hours.
