History Center Tour to Focus on Opening 1909 Celebration

Published on Jun 17, 2021

Bartow, Fla. (June 14, 2021) — More than a century ago, what is now the Polk County History Center opened as the new and modern Polk County Courthouse.

That opening celebration is the focal point of this month’s architectural tour, which begins at 11 a.m. Saturday at the History Center.

The monthly tour places a focus on the center’s Neo-classical architecture, which refers to the style of buildings built during the revival of classical Greek and Roman architecture. That style was highly popular in the 18th and 19th centuries.

When it was built, the courthouse was meant to be a beacon of Polk County and completed in 11 months. However, it wasn’t the first courthouse built on the site. It was the third.

The tour will continue through the Historical and Genealogical Library where guests can view historical photographs and dive into newspaper records that documented the opening at the time.
