Polk County Road Closures Update

Published on Sep 24, 2021

Bartow, Fla. (September 23, 2021) — Current and pending roadwork will mean traffic delays for motorists throughout Polk County as construction projects blanket the area.

Notably, the CSX Transportation railroad crossing at County Line Road and US 92 (New Tampa Hwy.) is closing for two weeks starting Monday, September 27. A joint Polk County-City of Lakeland project will rebuild the rail crossing, upgrade the signal, and construct a new northbound right turn lane. Detours are posted along US 92 (New Tampa Hwy.), Clark Road, and County Road 542 (Old Tampa Hwy.). Morning and evening peak-hour commuter delays are expected. Extra time should be added to trips through the area.

Two days later, on Wednesday, September 29, another Lakeland area project will close Ariana Street for 45 days from Faye Avenue to S. Grady Avenue to install new drainage as part of a county sidewalk project. Traffic will briefly detour along S. Westgate Avenue or Southern Avenue to bypass work zone.

On the other side of the county, a $1.63 million Polk County bridge replacement project is keeping Walk In Water Road east of Lake Wales closed until early November as crews work to complete the new span over Tiger Creek and rebuild the roadway approaches. Traffic continues to be detoured along State Road 60 (Hesperides Road) and County Road 630E. Site conditions prohibit an alternate crossing. Detours may be lengthy for some commuters.

Eloise Loop Road also remains closed to through traffic from Rifle Range Road to Eagle Lake Loop Road as crews continue boring new utilities lines for the City of Winter Haven. Eloise Loop Road is tentatively scheduled reopen in mid-October after utility installations and needed road repairs are completed.

Motorists should also be on the lookout for minor slowdowns related to construction-related lane closures occurring countywide. Drivers are strongly encouraged to be alert and use caution when encountering work zones.
