Bartow, Fla. (May 19, 2022) – The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation awarded Polk County Fire Rescue a $36,665 grant to purchase a new HURST Jaws of Life Water Compatible Extrication Tool Set for their fleet. On Tuesday’s Polk County Board of County Commissioners meeting, county commissioners accepted the grant.
“With close to 555 freshwater lakes within Polk County alone, this new HURST Equipment will serve as a major asset for Polk County Fire Rescue personnel,” Chief Robert Weech said. “Our personnel will be able to use this new HURST extrication equipment for a variety of rescue efforts without having to worry about damaging the tool due to prolonged water exposure in the field.”
Extrication equipment allows emergency rescue personnel to remove victims from their vehicle if they were involved in an accident or for other rescues involving victims that are entrapped within a small space. Extrication tool sets like the HURST tool set that Polk County Fire Rescue will purchase with the grant include a cutting device which is used to cut various types of vehicle metals, a spreading device, which is used to separate vehicle doors from their hinges and extension rams which are used to expand a confined area.
The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation grant was made possible due to partial funding from purchases made at Firehouse Subs restaurant locations throughout the U.S.
