Parks and Recreation to Host Grand Reopening of Simmers-Young Fields

Published: May 30, 2025

Bartow, Fla. (May 30, 2025) — After more than a year of being closed for renovations, Polk County Parks and Recreation staff will host the grand reopening of the soccer fields at Simmers-Young Park, located at 339 American Spirit Road in Winter Haven, beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 14. The upgraded athletic complex now features five artificial turf soccer fields, along with upgraded concessions and restrooms.

The celebration will begin with a short program with remarks from county dignitaries and leadership. A ceremonial first kick by local recreation league members will conclude the ceremony. Following the first kick, attendees can then enjoy the “Battle of the Badges,” a seven-on-seven flag football game between the Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) and Polk County Fire Rescue (PCFR). Halftime entertainment will feature a short youth soccer match. After the flag football game, there will be an awards ceremony and trophy presentation.

“This will be a fun event to celebrate the completion of these amazing turf fields and to showcase county and community partnerships,” said Derek Harpe, Polk County Parks and Recreation superintendent. “With new turf fields we don’t have to worry about weather damage or overuse affecting play conditions, giving residents a high quality and reliable place to play.”

This event will also feature vendors, information booths and interactive experiences with public safety vehicles.
