Published: October 10, 2025

Bartow, Fla. (Oct. 10, 2025) – Layth Mekkaoui joins Polk County’s Communications Division as its newest Public Safety Information Officer.

Mekkaoui’s background in both media relations and journalism brings a new perspective to telling Polk County Fire Rescue’s story. He most recently was an Associate News Producer at Spectrum Bay News 9 before joining the county’s Communications team.

“We are excited to have Layth join our Communications team. His communications, video and marketing experience are just some of the assets he brings to the job. He has already hit the ground running and has been an asset to the team,” said Amber Smith, Polk County Communications Division Director.

Mekkaoui joins fellow Public Safety PIO Nathaniel Gale. Both will help with recruitment efforts as well as highlighting the various programs and activities of PCFR.
