Bartow, Fla. (August 10, 2018) — Attempted road patching this afternoon revealed a collapsed cross drain beneath Lake Buffum Road West just north of the intersection with Mills Road and Minor Road in unincorporated Fort Meade. The pipe failure has undermined the road making it impassable for traffic. Polk County Roads & Drainage Division crews have closed the road and a detour will be in-place until repairs can be completed. The severity of the collapse indicates extensive road restoration is likely. Since temporary repairs may not be possible, this part of Lake Buffum Road West could be closed for an extended period. Because of the rural location, the detour route will be lengthy and motorists are advised to add more time to trips in this area.
