Bartow, Fla. (November 29, 2018) — Polk County’s consultant has determined the sinkhole below Johnson Avenue (County Road 580) just west of Powerline Road in Haines City to be much larger than previously thought. Recent borings indicate voids ranging from 60 feet deep along the edges to 160 feet deep at the center. Filling the voids will require much more cement-like grout and time to repair than originally estimated. The schedule to reopen the roadway has now been extended through December. Until the sinkhole is filled and the grout hardens enough to rebuild the pavement section, traffic will be detoured around the wok zone. Eastbound traffic along Johnson Avenue will detour at 30th Street, while westbound traffic will divert at Powerline Road. Motorists are advised to be alert to detour signs and to add a little extra time to trips through this area.
