Can you imagine if Polk County didn’t have a Household Hazardous Waste Facility? Where would electronic items like broken TVs or computer monitors go? You cannot dispose of these items in your regular garbage. To reduce illegal dumping and other harmful environmental impacts, our county provides accessible services for waste disposal, especially for toxic waste items.

Fortunately, Polk County residents can visit our county’s facility to dispose of these materials. The collection facility is located at 5 Environmental Loop Road South in Winter Haven, FL.

This facility provides a safe, convenient way for residents to properly dispose of hazardous materials free of charge.

Trained and properly equipped staff work at the facility to safely collect, sort, recycle and dispose of these items. This prevents hazardous materials from ending up in landfills or wastewater treatment plants where they can cause environmental harm.

Household Hazardous Waste Examples

What are some household hazardous waste examples?

Some examples include old paint, pesticides, motor oil, compact fluorescent light bulbs, pool chemicals and lithium-ion batteries. The Environmental Protection Agency defines this type of waste as “household products that can catch fire, react or explode under certain circumstances, or that are corrosive or toxic.”

Polk County Waste and RecyclingPolk County Waste and Recycling administration building provides a full list of household hazardous waste examples and types of wastes accepted at the facility. You can also find more hazardous waste resources  from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Each of these materials requires special handling. They should never go into the regular trash, poured down a drain or anywhere other than Polk County’s collection facility. Household chemicals and electronic waste are accepted with no additional fee at the facility.
